Back spasms are painful contractions of the back muscles. There are many causes of back spasms, and to understand what to do to fix this problem, you have to know the cause.
Cause 1: Twisting, straining, or tearing the back muscles. When you pick up a heavy object the wrong way, bend or stretch awkwardly, or jerk the muscles of your back, the muscles in your back may twist or strain, which can lead to back spasms. Back muscles can be torn because of an injury, sports, or too much exercise.
The main way to fix back spasms caused by twisted, strained, and torn muscles is to see your physician or an orthopedic doctor. They will be able to help fix the muscles, which will solve the back spasms.
Cause 2: Repeated movements of the spine. When the spine is moved over and over in the same way, problems like straining muscles and others can occur, leading to back spasms. When you stop moving your back, your muscles will try to keep moving without you. Your doctor will be able to help with this problem best.
Cause 3: Tense muscles. When back muscles are tensed and jerked often, back spasms will result. The best way to deal with this is to follow guidelines for relaxation and try to loosen your muscles on your own. If you aren’t feeling relief and the back spasms don’t go away, talk to your doctor or a chiropractor, a doctor who can help with strengthening and relaxing your back.
Cause 4: Problems with the nervous system. The nervous system is the way the brain communicates with every other part of the body. Back spasms many be caused by problems outside of the nervous system affecting the messages sent from the brain or problems with the nervous system itself.
Things that might interrupt messages from the nervous system:
- Exercising for too long
- Dehydration – not drinking enough water or liquids
- Not enough salt, potassium, or calcium in the body
- Health disorders that affect muscle strength
Definitely consult with a doctor or chiropractor once figuring out the cause of your back spasms. If treated the wrong way, or not treated at all, they can grow worse and cause even more serious problems.
