Storms and severe weather changes in the Pacific Northwest seem to be the cause of a massive Brown Pelican die off. Over 200 birds have been found dead or dying by animal rescue workers in recent weeks. Some articles suggest that frostbite may be the cause, a result of storms in Washington and Oregon clashing with the unusually warm weather.

I did a fair amount of beachcombing up here in Washington last weekend and noticed a higher than usual amount of seabird carnage on among the (tree-sized) drift wood. Fortunately not pelicans, but it still caught me off guard.
